The Express Lanes are easy to use and help you get where you need to go. However, there are some new aspects of the road that are worth reading about before you get in your car and try your new route.

  • Mind the Gates

    The 95 Express Lanes are reversible and entry and exit points open and close depending on which direction traffic is flowing. Gates let you know if you can enter the Express Lanes. If gates are blocking access to an entry point, do not attempt to enter the Lanes via that access point.

  • Mind the Barrier

    The 95 Express Lanes are separated from the regular lanes by concrete barriers or guardrails. Do not attempt to pass through these barriers or access openings that are restricted to emergency vehicles or eligible personnel.

    The 495 Express Lanes are separated from the regular lanes by white posts. Under no circumstances should you pass through these barriers to get in or out of the Express Lanes. It could put you and others in danger. It is also illegal, resulting in a fine. So please mind the barrier and stay on your side.

  • Pull Over

    If for any reason you need to stop while in the 495 Express Lanes, please pull over to the nearest shoulder on the left. In the 95 Express Lanes, please locate the closest shoulder, pull over and stay in your car. You should not get out of your vehicle unless it is an emergency. In an emergency, please move safely away from your vehicle and wait until assistance arrives.

  • Stay Alert

    From time-to-time, individual ramp closures may be required. Pay attention to the variable message signs and lane control signs on the Express Lanes, which provide advance notice of closures. We apologize for any inconvenience caused during essential maintenance work.

    Driving distracted increases your risk of being in an accident fourfold. Stay focused on the road to keep you, and others around you, safe.

  • Express Assist

    We have dedicated safety service patrol vehicles to assist you if you break down in the Lanes. They will arrive to you quickly to get you safely back on your way. If you do break down, please wait in your vehicle for help to arrive.

  • Enforcement and Protection

    The Virginia State Police patrol the lanes and enforce the HOV rules. The troopers are also nearby in case of an incident.
