Entering the Lanes

You know it's a sign for entry onto the Express Lanes when you see the purple banner with the E-ZPass® logo and "EXPRESS ONLY."

Everyone needs an E-ZPass or E-ZPass® FlexSM.

Carpoolers

Carpoolers with 3 or more people in the vehicle and an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV mode do not pay a toll.

Buses

Buses and two axle vehicles may use the lanes. Vehicles with three or more axles may not use the lanes at any time.

Express Lanes Begin

When traveling southbound, the I-395 HOV lanes end and the Express Lanes begin on I-395 near Edsall Road. Drivers traveling in the HOV lanes should not enter the Express Lanes without an E-ZPass. The Express Lanes use a Lane Use Management System to help safely manage traffic. If there is a green arrow above your lane, the lane is open. A red X above your lane means you need to exit the lane, as the lane is closed. Please follow the posted speeds on the digital speed limit signs when on the Express Lanes.

Express Lanes End/HOV Lanes Begin

When traveling northbound, the Express Lanes end and the HOV lanes begin on I-395 north near Edsall Road. Signs will alert you that you are approaching the end of the Express Lanes. If you do not have three people in your car or an applicable clean fuel plate when the occupancy restriction is in effect on the I-395 HOV lanes, you should follow signs like this one to exit onto the I-395 northbound regular lanes

The 95 Express Lanes use dynamic tolls to provide you with a predictable trip. You will see pricing signs before all entrances to the Express Lanes or anytime you have a choice to use the Express Lanes or take the regular lanes. The signs display up to three Express Lanes exits with the toll price to those points.

The pricing signs before an Express Lanes entrance show the cost to travel to a maximum of three upcoming exits. It's important to remember that, in some cases, not all available exit points will be displayed on the electronic signs.

Don't see your exit? It might fall between the exits listed on the sign or you might see it on another pricing sign later during your trip. The displayed prices change to reflect the current toll prices. When you enter the Express Lanes, you lock in your toll rate until you see another pricing sign or you exit the Express Lanes.

While on the Lanes

When you are traveling on the 95 Express Lanes you might see overhead pricing signs. These signs display the costs to travel to exits farther down the road. When you see a sign like this, you decide if you want to pay an additional toll to continue on the Express Lanes or exit back to the regular lanes. Learn more about overhead pricing signs.

Get Ready to Exit

When you're ready to exit the Express Lanes, you can return to the regular lanes or exit onto major roadways. All exit signs on the 95 Express Lanes will have white letters on a green background. If you plan to exit onto a major roadway, look for a sign like this one that says EXPRESS EXIT.

If you'd like to exit the Express Lanes and return to the regular lanes, look for a sign like this one. You'll know it's an exit sign leading to the regular lanes if it says LOCAL EXIT. The sign will list upcoming roads you can access from the regular lanes.

The first two exits and prices show the cost to travel to two popular destinations from your entry point.

The final exit and price you see shows the cost to travel to the furthest point you can go in the Express Lanes from that entry point.

Don't See Your Exit?

It's important to remember that not all available exit points will be displayed on the electronic signs. For example, if you enter the Express Lanes and head north, the sign may say that the toll to I-66 W is $4.30 and to I-495 N is $6.30. If you are getting off at Route 7, you know that the toll will be between $4.30 and $6.30.

When you're ready to exit the Express Lanes, look for signs like this one and get into the left lane.

Follow the signs to the exit ramp, and you'll be on your way to your destination.
